The Center for Material Culture Studies at the University of Delaware helps to integrate and enhance the University's rich resources for the creation, study, and conservation of material culture. It promotes the learning from and the teaching about all things people make and the ways people have acted upon the physical and visible world. To do so, it administers a popular undergraduate minor in material culture studies. It also sponsors interdisciplinary seminars and conferences, including the very successful symposium for emerging scholars, and fosters public understanding of material culture in our community beyond campus, at the state, regional, national, and international levels.
Faculty who support the Center's programming have primary appointments in a broad spectrum of departments across the University, including Anthropology, Art, Art Conservation, Art History, Black American Studies, English, Fashion and Apparel Studies, Geography, Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Managment, History, Sociology, Urban Affairs and Public Policy, the University of Delaware Library, and the University Museums. Many of them are also affiliated with other Centers and interdisciplinary programs on campus, including the Center for Historic Architecture and Design, the PhD program in the History of American Civilization, the Hagley Program in the History of Technology and Industrialization, the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture, and Women's Studies. The Center regularly coordinates activities with cultural institutions in the mid-Atlantic such as the Delaware Art Museum, the Hagley Museum, and Winterthur Museum & Country Estate.
